Online Strategies to Teach VOCABULARY
SpellingCity.com
I have created a vocabulary list of our geometry unit terms on this site. You and your child can access the vocabulary list through your child's log-in. If you need your child's log-in information please contact me. Your child's membership on this site has been paid for by our PTO, as the features that become accessible through the paid accounts are vital to your child's in school and at home learning. Through accessing this website, your child will gain practice learning and associating our math vocabulary. The website provides spelling and vocabulary games that incorporate fun and interaction to help your child succeed. The game Word-O-Rama is one of my personal favorite vocabulary games on this site. It will give your child a description of the term and your child will need to think of the correct word. This is especially helpful in learning some of the mathematical vocabulary that can sometimes look intimidating to the students. Click the title to navigate to this website.

Quizlet.com
This website allows users to create a set of vocabulary terms with definitions that can be studied in a form similar to flash cards. Select "Create a Set" next to the search bar at the top of the website. You or your child will be directed through a series of tabs to create a vocabulary list. I recommend that your type the vocabulary words and definitions into the site independently so that they are able to gain practice learning the words which they are preparing to study. The process of creating the vocabulary list on the website will help your child commit them to memory. Your child can continue to access and practice with their self created flash cards until they have mastered the concepts. To access this website click the title above.

Paper strategies to teach vocabulary
Vocabulary Rock and Roll
This is a vocabulary teaching strategy that your child will be familiar with because we use it in class to review our spelling words occasionally. This will be an excellent tool to help your child gain understanding of our math vocabulary. The materials needed for this activity include a set index cards with the vocabulary words written, dice, a notebook or pad of paper, a pencil, and markers or crayons. The directions we use in class are included in the document below, but these can be modified by having your child play alone, with one other person, or with multiple people. This game can be modified to accommodate to your child's needs by changing the directions on the chart. An example of another prompt to put on the chart would be "Use the word in a sentence." Click the link to the right to download the chart and directions. |

Math Vocabulary Book
This strategy to teaching vocabulary can be an ongoing tool for your child. To create the math vocabulary book, download the word document to the left and print out multiple copies. Additionally, you will need construction paper, a three hole punch, two pronged tacks, and writing utensils. The construction paper will be used as a front a back cover. Your child will write the vocabulary word the center oval on the page. Next, your child will complete the four exterior boxes according to their label. They can repeat this strategy until they have made a page for each vocabulary term. To construct the book, the construction paper and vocabulary pages will need to be three hole punched and the tacks put through the holes to bind the pages together. This book can be used throughout the year so your child will have one place to find all the math vocabulary words we have learned. |
